The Canada–New Zealand Gap

Two countries moved in opposite directions.

This page exists because most families are still planning against 2019 rules. Below is the comparison as it stands now — dimension by dimension, without the marketing.

Side by side

Post-study work rights

Canada

Post-graduation work permit now tied to eligible fields of study; many college programs no longer qualify.

New Zealand

Up to three years of open work rights for degree-level graduates, not restricted by field.

Route to residence

Canada

Express Entry general draws have been settling in the 470–500 CRS range, well above what a fresh graduate typically scores.

New Zealand

A six-point system: skilled employment plus points from qualification, income or occupational registration.

Occupation shortcuts

Canada

Category-based draws shift by year and are narrow; no standing published list you can plan a degree around.

New Zealand

Green List roles carry straight-to-residence or work-to-residence status and are published openly.

Experience required

Canada

Skilled work experience competes against a rising cutoff — time worked does not guarantee an invitation.

New Zealand

Work experience requirement is set to fall from three years to two for most applicants in August 2026.

Volume and competition

Canada

Study-permit intake caps and a stated reduction in temporary residents; new applications down roughly 44% year over year.

New Zealand

A smaller system with published settings, so a plan made today is still legible in three years.

What this does not mean.

It does not mean Canada is closed. It means the Canadian route now rewards a narrower set of profiles, and that a college diploma chosen for cost reasons is far less likely to convert into work rights than it was three years ago.

It also does not mean New Zealand is easy. Institutions decline applications, visa officers ask hard questions about genuine intent and funds, and Green List roles require real registration or real salary thresholds. The difference is that the requirements are published and stable enough to plan against.

Policy moves. We review these settings as they change and will show you the source document on the call rather than asking you to take our word for it. See how we work.

The gap is a policy fact, not a sales pitch.

Both governments publish their settings. We simply read them side by side, and we will send you the source links after the call so you can check every figure yourself.

We will mark which options carry work rights, which carry residence potential, and which are dead ends dressed as bargains.
